Fears and Phobias

Phobia scenarios for VR exposure therapy. Created using Unreal Engine 5, with realistic graphics
Intense fear of heights, known as acrophobia, can develop in children who have experienced significant stress from a traumatic fall
Fear of flying can develop after a traumatic incident or by observing someone else's negative experience. As a result, individuals may start avoiding air travel, opting for road travel and other alternatives instead
Amaxophobia is the term for the fear of riding in a car, categorized as a specific phobia. Individuals with this condition experience intense and irrational fear and anxiety when in or near a car, often leading them to avoid driving or riding in vehicles entirely
Spiders are often seen as venomous predators that kill their prey. Those with arachnophobia not only avoid areas where spiders might appear but also tend to eliminate them immediately upon sight
Approximately 3% of the global population suffers from claustrophobia, the fear of enclosed spaces. Everyday situations like using a parking garage, riding an elevator, or boarding an aircraft can be incredibly challenging, leading to constant and intense stress
Cynophobia is the fear of dogs, causing individuals to feel extreme anxiety in their presence. This phobia often stems from a traumatic experience with dogs, such as being bitten
Glossophobia, or the fear of public speaking, has become more widespread following the social distancing measures of the pandemic and is estimated to affect approximately 77% of the population
Germophobia, or the fear of bacteria, diseases, viruses, or parasites, has become more prevalent following the social distancing measures of the pandemic and is estimated to affect a significant portion of the population
People with insect phobias often avoid situations where they might encounter insects and find themselves unable to explain why these creatures provoke such intense fear
Nyctophobia is an extreme fear of the dark, often exacerbated by a person's heightened nervous activity, such as excessive emotional sensitivity and increased susceptibility to anxiety
Mysophobia is an extreme fear of germs and contamination, often exacerbated by a person's heightened nervous activity, such as excessive emotional sensitivity and increased susceptibility to anxiety
Trypanophobia refers to the fear of injections or medical procedures involving needles. This phobia causes intense fear in affected individuals, often leading them to avoid necessary medical treatments

with East Carolina University (ECU)
"Effectiveness of XR-Based Exposure Therapy for Phobic Disorders"
The primary objective of this research is to examine the effectiveness of XR-based exposure therapy for phobic disorders, specifically acrophobia (fear of heights) and agoraphobia (fear of open spaces). The results indicated statistically significant differences across time, with the XR-based exposure group showing greater reductions in physiological markers such as heart rate variability and electrodermal activity compared to the traditional exposure and time-delay groups. Additionally, participants reported significant decreases in perceived phobic responses, suggesting that XR-based therapy offers multiple advantages, including greater safety, cost-effectiveness, and the ability to create gradual exposure assignments tailored to individual needs.

"Analyzing EEG Patterns in Young Adults Exposed to Different Acrophobia Levels: a VR Study"
The primary objective of this research is to examine acrophobia, a widely prevalent and highly severe phobia characterized by an overwhelming dread of heights, which has a substantial impact on a significant proportion of individuals worldwide. The objective of our study was to develop a real-time and precise instrument for evaluating levels of acrophobia by utilizing electroencephalogram (EEG) signals. Read full study here
